Nkomiso

Description This group photo was taken next to the tennis courts at the Lake Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, N.Y. Its annual tournament (est. 1921) was underway. It's a spontaneous gathering of officials, players, and spectators.
Date 1924. The event ran from July 14–21.
Source

Original publication: Lake Mohonk Weekly Bulletin, seasonal, July 26, 1924 pp. 2–3. A handout for hotel guests that gave details on recent, current, and upcoming activities.

Lauretta Martin's original photo, which was passed down the family line. She's holding a racket and wearing a wide headband, second from lower left. Everyone in the group picture received the same keepsake, upon request.
Paul Martin is wearing a white polo shirt and standing seventh from top left. American Lawn Tennis, Aug 15, 1924 p. 370 – via HathiTrust. The couple reached the semi-finals in mixed doubles.
Immediate source: from my own collection.
Author The photographer was not credited. It was taken next to a footbridge (far left).
Other versions Archived at: Panoramic.

Other information: The names of those pictured are nearly all unknown. Three players are sitting on the grass with their rackets. One of them is singles finalist Henry Bassford (far right). That's either Daniel Smiley (1855–1930) or a look-alike, standing fifth from the top left. It's based on the distinctively white, bushy mustache and goatee beard. He was the resort's proprietor from 1912 to 30. Vintage postcard: resort towers. Wiki Commons.
